What to Expect After a Loved One Passes

Losing someone you care about is never easy, and the hours and days that follow can feel overwhelming. Many families tell us they simply didn’t know what steps came next. Our hope is that a little clarity can bring a small measure of comfort during an already difficult time.

In the First Hours

If your loved one passes at home under hospice or expected circumstances, you do not need to call emergency services. Instead, contact the funeral home (or the hospice nurse, who will often make the call for you). We can come to the home to bring your loved one into our care gently and respectfully.

If the death is unexpected or occurs in a public place or hospital, medical staff or first responders will usually handle the initial arrangements and notify the appropriate authorities. In those cases, the funeral home is typically contacted once the medical examiner or hospital has released your loved one.

Notifying Family and Gathering Information

Once your loved one is in our care, take a moment to call close family members when you feel ready. There is no perfect way to share the news, and it’s okay if the conversation is short. Many families find it helpful to designate one or two people to handle the wider circle of calls or messages so you don’t have to repeat the details.

It can also be useful to locate a few key pieces of information if they are readily available:

  • Any pre-arrangement documents or insurance policies
  • The name of your loved one’s physician
  • A list of immediate family members and their contact information

Don’t worry if you can’t find everything right away. We can guide you through what’s needed and help locate records if necessary.

How We Can Help

When you reach out to Walker’s, one of our directors will sit with you (in person or by phone) to walk through the next steps at your pace. Together we’ll discuss:

  • The type of service or gathering that feels right for your family
  • Whether your loved one had any wishes already written down
  • Options for burial, cremation, or other arrangements
  • Timing for visitation, a memorial service, or a graveside service

There is no rush to make every decision in one conversation. We can handle the immediate care of your loved one while you take the time you need.

Practical Details in the Days Ahead

Over the next few days, we will prepare the necessary paperwork, including the death certificate. Multiple certified copies are usually needed for banks, insurance companies, and government agencies. We’ll let you know how many copies are typically recommended and can order extras if you’d like.

We can also help coordinate with cemeteries, churches, florists, and other vendors so you don’t have to manage every phone call alone. If your family has cultural or religious traditions you’d like honored, simply let us know. We’re here to support those wishes.

Taking Care of Yourself and Each Other

Grief looks different for everyone. Some people want to stay busy with arrangements; others need quiet time. Both are normal. If you’d like, we can share resources for grief support groups or counselors in the Alamance County area, or simply give you space.

There is no single “right” way to move through these first days. Our role is to handle the practical details with care so you and your family can focus on remembering your loved one and supporting one another.

If you have questions at any point (whether it’s the middle of the night or weeks later) please don’t hesitate to call. We’re here whenever you need us.

Can I just say that funerals stick in the mind of a loved one years after a death? It’s important that you get it right. Please don’t put your wishes in the drawer with the rest of your files. Oh, and that thing where you tell the kids what you want. That’s not the best either.

Why should you attend a funeral? The presence of family and friends at the funeral is appreciated. We gather to acknowledge a life that was lived. We gather to comfort those for whom life has just been forever changed by the death of someone they loved.

Are you considering going to a funeral? Will you be a guest or, are you the survivor in charge and deciding if there will even be a funeral? Either way, before you just skip the funeral perhaps you should consider how elephants behave when one of their species dies. Perhaps we have something to learn from Dumbo.

One of the realities of losing a spouse or a parent is the impact that event has on living arrangements. Are we living in the “right” place? Is the house too big? Is it too far away from family? Will my surviving parent be safe where they live? Should I move to be closer to mom or should mom move closer to me?

Even months after the funeral it’s not uncommon to feel just not exactly right. We all lose our way from time to time. Things happen and we can’t find our JOY. It’s not really so much gone, as it is misplaced. Life feels dull and the days seem to drag. No matter what the circumstances, if you look for it, you can find your own personal JOY again. However, you will have to work a bit to find it and reconnect.

Emotions are raw when families are mourning a death. Tread lightly and be kind. Remember you may want to have Thanksgiving dinner with these people in a few months!

It is not uncommon for people to ask themselves, “Since I never had any children, who will take care of my funeral plans?” That is all the more reason to preplan your own funeral!

Spread the work around. Let go, embrace help and give them something to do. You’ll feel better that things are getting done and they’ll feel better because they are involved and helping.

For most of us, one of our first questions when we think we need a funeral home soon is, “How much will it cost?” It’s understandable that everyone wants a simple answer to this question. Unfortunately, there is no one simple answer.

How does planning for your funeral in advance save you money? Doesn’t it just let the funeral home make money on your money? How big a part should emotion play in your funeral selections?
