Zachary Thomas Carpenter

April 30, 1985 - February 16, 2026

Zachary “Zach” Thomas Carpenter, a man of quick wit, deep conviction, and an even deeper love for his people, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 16, 2026, following a brief illness. Though born in Dallas, Texas, Zach was the first to tell you that his heart and home truly belonged to New Orleans. A proud LSU alumnus and a lifelong student of the world, Zach possessed an innate ability to connect with anyone. He was the ultimate storyteller, using a blend of dry humor and well-timed sarcasm to bring lightness to any room. As a minimalist, Zach didn't collect "things"— he collected experiences, culture, and memories. He was never afraid to take a leap, whether it was trying a new cuisine or moving across the country to start a new chapter. Zach’s professional life was a reflection of his character. As an urban planner, he devoted his career to the pursuit of affordable housing, driven by the belief that everyone deserves a place to call home. This wasn’t just a job; it was an extension of the man who spent his time volunteering with Habitat for Humanity and helping Hurricane Katrina survivors rebuild their lives Of all the titles he held, his most cherished was husband. Zach met the love of his life, Terral Routh Carpenter, in Dallas. Together, they navigated life’s many adventures, eventually finding their "found home" in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Whether they were embarking on cross-country road trips or discovering hidden "hole-in-the-wall" gems, Zach was Terral’s steadfast partner, confidant, and best friend. Zach was the husband to Terral Routh Carpenter; the son of Jerry Arvard Carpenter and Donna Gaye Edmonds Carpenter; the son-in-law to John Byron Routh and Paula Hightower Routh; the brother-in-law to James Byron Routh and wife Jessica; as well as a devoted friend. His spirit — and his penchant for mischief — lives on in his beloved dogs, Basil and Olive. We imagine him being greeted at the gates by a Second Line — the brass bands playing, the umbrellas spinning, and Zach leading the way into the next great adventure.A celebration of life will be held for close family and friends. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to support his wife during this transition, with a portion of the proceeds being gifted to Habitat for Humanity in Zach’s honor.Donate to Honoring Zach Carpenter’s Legacy, organized by Terral Carpentergofund.me
