William “Bill” John Vander Wall, 89, of Raleigh, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on November 8, 2025. Born on September 10, 1936, in East Orange, New Jersey, Bill was the beloved son of Agnes L. Vander Wall and Martin Vander Wall, brother to Martin “Sonny” Vander Wall and his beloved sister, Eleanor Oelkers, all of whom preceded him in death.
Bill proudly enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in February 1954, serving his country for three years. Following his military service, he married Betty Jean (Pleasant) Vander Wall and returned to New Jersey, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Arts from Montclair State University.
Later, Bill and his family returned to North Carolina, where he continued his education at UNC-Greensboro and ultimately earned both a master’s and Ph.D. from North Carolina State University in Raleigh, where he would settle for the next 60 years.
Bill’s passion for education led him to a distinguished career as an assistant professor at NC State, where he taught graphics and design courses for more than 30 years.
Beyond his academic achievements, Bill was a man of many talents and varied interests. He loved both river and surf fishing and found joy in the quiet moments by the water. A self-taught guitarist, Bill shared his love of music by teaching countless young students in his home over the years. His devotion to his faith was unwavering—Bill was a devout Christian who loved the Lord and never missed an opportunity to share his faith with others.
Bill is survived by his only child and son, Robin W. Vander Wall, who will cherish his father’s legacy of love, faith, and learning.
