William (Bill) James Erkes, Sr, 98, passed away July 18, 2026 at his residence in Chapel Hill, NC with family by his side.
Bill’s love for flying was only surpassed by his love for his wife Peggy and his family. He traveled the world as a pilot for Pan American World Airways. He pioneered new air routes and became Pan Am's Chief Pilot and Vice President of Flight Operations- capping a long, wonderful career in the aviation industry. His “second” career was Will-O-Mar Orchards, the Pennsylvania home he dreamt of, built, developed and nurtured for more than 50 years. He retired to Alabama where he made thousands of wooden crosses to give away around the world. His dedication and hard work were evident in everything he did. He was generous to all and his faith was a testament to his steadfast love for his Savior, Jesus.
He is survived by three of his children, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren as well as three sisters, all of whom he loved dearly. He was preceded in death by his wife, one son and two brothers.
Services and burial are planned for a future date in Pennsylvania. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial gifts be made to the Point Pleasant Community Baptist Church (Cemetery Fund) https://www.ppbaptist.org/Contribution
