Victoria "Vikki" Ann Hoyt-Cates

July 30, 1951 — May 17, 2026

Victoria “Vikki” Ann Hoyt-Cates, 74, of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, passed away unexpectedly at home surrounded by family on May 17, 2026, following a presumed cerebral aneurysm.

Vikki lived a life deeply rooted in love for nature, animals, and creativity. She also dedicated her life to her children and building a home filled with warmth, humor, curiosity, and care for the people and creatures around her.

Born on July 30, 1951, in Amityville, NY, to Lorraine Hummel and Robert Gerard Hoyt, Vikki spent most of her childhood in upstate New York. The family also lived abroad in Greece and Trinidad while her father was working for General Electric. They ultimately settled in Durham, NC, and she attended Northern High School, UNC-Greensboro, and UNC-Chapel Hill. She was self-employed and ran her own home billing service for psychotherapists; the perfect job for someone who loved keeping meticulous records and notes. She retired in 2022.

Vikki was married for 46 years to the love of her life, Robert “Muskie” Cates of Chapel Hill. They met working at the Carolina Coffee Shop in 1978 and created a special life together full of joy, delicious food, and outdoor adventures.

She is survived by her husband, Muskie, as well as her daughter, Jaylen Hoyt Cates of Efland, NC, her son, Ezra Lucas Hoyt Cates of Greenville, SC, her mother, Lorraine Hummel Hoyt of Chapel Hill, NC, her sister Eileen Alison Hoyt of Pittsboro, NC, her sister Sharon Louis Hoyt of Chapel Hill, NC, her brother Peter Andrew Hoyt of Hillsborough, NC and numerous beloved nieces and nephews and their children.

She was preceded in death by her father, Robert Gerard Hoyt of Durham, NC, her aunt Sister Joyce Elaine Hummel of West Islip, NY, her sister Donna Jeanne Hoyt of Chapel Hill, NC, and her nephew Joshua Christian Hoyt of Hillsborough, NC.

Vikki was happiest outdoors and surrounded by nature. She loved going for long walks, birdwatching, backpacking, canoeing and, more recently, traveling with their tiny camping trailer. Her real passion was needlework; cross-stitching, crocheting, quilting and especially knitting. She also enjoyed cooking and feeding family and friends. While Vikki loved the mountains, she really enjoyed spending time in the blackwater rivers and swamps of Eastern North Carolina and the beaches, her heart always belonged to Ocracoke. Her idea of heaven was sitting with her family on the porch of the Hurricane House on Ocracoke Island and watching the fishing boats go out in the morning, the kayakers paddling by, the coming and going of the ferries, and the red sails of The Windfall as it passed in front of the sun setting across the Pamlico Sound.

Vikki also enjoyed watching soap operas and the news, always sharing links and articles on politics, research, nature, and anything else that caught her eye. Vikki was an avid animal lover who cared deeply for countless pets and creatures throughout her life, including dogs, cats, fish, chickens, guinea hens, hamsters, cockatiels, parakeets, lovebirds, a military macaw, and, most recently, her neighbors’ dog, Bodhi, who joined her on her daily walks.

Those who knew Vikki will always remember her sharp wit, sweetness, creativity, humor, stubbornness, compassion, and the way she could make people feel cared for through small gestures. Her sudden absence leaves an immense void in the lives of those who love her.

A celebration of her life will be held on June 6, 2026, at 4:00 pm. Additional service details will be announced by the family.

Vikki chose cremation, and there will be no formal visitation.

Instead of flowers, the family encourages those who wish to honor Vikki’s memory to spend time outdoors, care for an animal, cook someone a meal, or show kindness to a friend or family member who may need a little extra sunshine.
