Susan Hilliard Martin passed away on April 11th at her son’s home in Chapel Hill, just one day after her 73rd birthday. Born in Burlington, NC, on April 10, 1953, she was the only child of Thelma Cates Hilliard and William Price Hilliard.
Raised in Burlington, Susan graduated from Walter Williams High School before attending UNCG, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education with a minor in Music. She later received her Master’s Degree in Elementary Education from Elon University.
Susan dedicated her life to teaching, beginning her career at Alexander Wilson Elementary and later moving to Grove Park Elementary, where she taught until her retirement. A distinguished educator, she earned her National Board Certification, served as President of the North Carolina Association of Educators, and was named the ABSS Teacher of the Year. As a National Delegate for the NEA, she was a tireless champion for the rights of children and teachers at both the state and national levels, touching the lives of thousands of students and families throughout her career.
Susan made her home in Chapel Hill with her husband, Kenneth Harrison Martin, who preceded her in death in 2009. She is survived by Joshua Brandon Martin, William Tucker Martin, and Jennifer Faith Tillman, as well as her beloved grandchildren: Kenna Elizabeth Hailey Martin, Ronald Emerson Kaden Martin, William Harrison Martin, Mackenzie Ann Martin, Kennedy Price Martin, Kali Faith Tillman, and Chelsea Jaymes Tillman.
