Ray S. Tolan, a highly talented metal sculptor and fine wood worker, artist, and passionate musician, passed away peacefully on December 3, 2025, in his beloved hometown of Chapel Hill, NC, after a long illness. Born on May 3, 1957, Ray’s creative spirit and dedication to his craft brought beauty into the lives of many.
Ray’s artistic talents were matched by his diverse interests. He was an avid cook, gardener, and cherished music lover, known for his ability to bring joy and life to any gathering through his culinary skills and musical talents. Ray loved to create, whether it was through the sculpting of metal pieces that echoed his unique vision or through the intricate woodworking that captured the warmth of fine craftsmanship.
A beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Ray is survived by his wife, Thersa Nomi (nee Writz) Tolan, and his two sons, Luca Salvatore Tolan and his wife Claire, and Patrick Dylan Tolan and his wife Leah. He also leaves his treasured granddaughter, Molly Florence Tolan, whose laughter brightened his days. Ray was known for his close-knit family ties, which included his siblings: William Frost Tolan Jr. and his wife Rebecca, Susan Gayle Tolan, Robin Tolan Hearley and her husband Mike, Greg Tolan, and Natalie Tolan Butler and her husband Jaime. He was also a loving uncle to numerous nieces and nephews.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents, William Frost Tolan Sr. and Susan Shirley Tolan-nee-Spencer, whose influence shaped his artistic journey and passion for life.
