Pamela Shangler

June 16, 1944 — March 15, 2025

Pittsboro

Pamela Shangler passed away peacefully on March 15, 2025, in Pittsboro, North Carolina. She lived a life filled with creativity, kindness, and an abiding love for family.

Born in Oakland, California, Pam’s early childhood was in Alameda and Marin. After her father’s Navy service during World War II, the family moved to Toledo, Ohio, to join his father's business. There, Pam’s lifelong love of reading and learning took root in frequent visits to the Toledo Public Library.

She graduated from Ottawa Hills High School and the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, forming friendships that would last a lifetime. Pam returned to the San Francisco Bay Area, where several years later, she met and married her partner in life, John Shangler.

Together, they raised their family in Walnut Creek and built a joyful life centered on love, respect and shared traditions – including cherished summer visits to the Outer Banks which inspired their retirement to North Carolina.

A gifted artisan, Pam found joy in knitting, crocheting, quilting, and needlepoint, among other crafts. Her hands were rarely still—always creating something beautiful and meaningful. She was also an accomplished cook and baker, known for the warmth and comfort she brought to others through her kitchen.

Pam’s generosity, thoughtfulness, and compassion were evident not only in her family life and steadfast friendships, but also in her devotion and service to the Episcopal Church and community.

Pam is survived by her husband, John Shangler; her sister, Dena Early; brother-in-law Jerry Early; her brother, Timothy Gilbert; nephews Zac and Nathan Early; niece Katherine Early; brother-in-law Dean Shangler; sister-in-law Deborah Pope; nephews Nick and Matt Shangler; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. She was predeceased by her daughter, Jane Lorenzen; her son, Brady Lorenzen; and her parents, Jim and Jane Gilbert.

Pam’s memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. May her legacy of creativity and kindness continue to inspire those she touched.

Memorial donations may be made to the Savitzsky Library at 3000 Galloway Ridge, Pittsboro, NC 27312, or to the Alzheimer’s Association, www.alz.org. (Both are tax-deductible.)
