Margaret Hyman Hartley died Saturday July 18, 2026, in a UNC Chapel Hill hospital after a brief illness. The daughter of Dick and Helen Hyman of Darlington, SC, Margaret was born in the McLeod Infirmary in Florence, SC, on July 13, 1944. At the time of her death Margaret had lived in Saxapahaw, NC, for more than half her life.
The daughter of a nurse, Margaret by training was a medical lab technician. After retiring from the American Red Cross, she worked in medical records at the Duke University Medical Center into her seventies.
Margaret was predeceased by her parents, her brother Richard, her sister Muffet and her son Michael O. Hartley, Jr. Surviving are three nephews: Bennett Sansbury (Mary) of Mauldin, SC, David Hyman (Liz) of Orlando, FL and Michael Hyman of Miami, FL; a niece: Cecile Hyman Lanao (Luis) of Morrisville, NC; sister-in-law Iris Weisman Hyman (Richard) of Boca Raton, FL and brother-in-law Olin Sansbury (Muffet) of Spartanburg, SC. She is also survived by four nieces and four grandnephews.
Margaret enjoyed her long life in Saxapahaw among loyal friends and neighbors. In addition to being active in the Saxapahaw United Methodist Church, Margaret appreciated her involvement in her book club and dinner club.
A celebration of her life will be held at 3pm Sunday, August 2, 2026, at Bethlehem Presbyterian Church in Saxapahaw, NC, on Bethlehem Church Road. A reception for all attendees will follow in the Fellowship Hall.
