Leonard Eugene Bergey, 71, of Efland, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on August 9, 2025, at UNC Hospital in Hillsborough after a courageous battle with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). Despite undergoing a bone marrow transplant in late 2024, Leonard faced numerous complications from graft-versus-host disease and transitioned to hospice care surrounded by love and support.
Born on May 13, 1954, to James Harold Bergey, Sr. and Mary Jane Troyer Bergey, Leonard was raised in a family rooted in faith and farming. He carried those values throughout his life, dedicating himself to agriculture and the preservation of traditional farming techniques. Leonard was known for his gentle spirit, quiet wisdom, and unwavering kindness.
Leonard’s life was a testament to service, stewardship, and simplicity. He was a lifelong learner and teacher, especially passionate about draft horses and sustainable farming. His team of Percherons was a familiar sight at local agricultural events, where he demonstrated horse-drawn plowing and logging, keeping the old ways alive for future generations. In his youth, Leonard served as a missionary in Ghana, West Africa, reflecting his deep commitment to serving others.
Whether gardening, canning, enjoying craft beer and homemade wine, or sharing a hearty meal and laughter with loved ones, Leonard found joy in the everyday. His presence was a gift to all who knew him—a man of quiet strength and enduring grace.
Leonard is survived by his beloved partner, Darlene Kinard of Efland, NC; his son, David Bergey of Chesapeake, VA; and his former spouse, Elsa Bergey of Chesapeake, VA.
