Larry Wayne Ray, a devoted family man, veteran, and respected businessman, passed away peacefully at his home on June 15, 2026, after a courageous battle with Lewy Body Dementia. Born on July 23, 1948, in Durham, North Carolina, Larry lived a life marked by steadfast dedication to his family, his work, and his passions.

Following his graduation from Orange High School and further studies at NC State University, Larry answered the call of duty and enlisted in the United States Navy on February 23, 1967. He served honorably aboard the USS Vogelgesang, a destroyer stationed in Virginia Beach, Virginia, earning certification as a Boilerman Fireman. After his discharge on November 18, 1972, Larry returned to Durham to contribute to the family's legacy, initially working under the guidance of his father at Nu-Tread Tire Company.

With an entrepreneurial spirit and a keen vision, Larry transformed the family business by spearheading its re-tread division and eventually establishing his own enterprise, NTR, Inc., which he led from 1998 until his retirement in October 2017. His unwavering commitment to innovation and quality left an indelible mark on the company and the industry.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Larry was an avid outdoorsman whose love for hunting and fishing was well known among family and friends. He delighted in bass tournaments and was proud of his legendary catch of a 300-pound tuna, a story often shared with a smile. His passion extended to raising and training his beloved Labrador Retrievers, whom he accompanied on numerous duck hunting excursions. Larry’s membership in the Buckhorn Gun Club and Rockingham Gun Club reflected his deep connection to the sporting community.

Larry’s personality was marked by a warm sense of humor and a playful spirit. He was known as a practical jokester and enjoyed lively moments with loved ones. One cherished memory remains of him waking his daughter each morning with the cheerful tune of "Jeremiah was a Bullfrog," a testament to his loving presence and joyful heart. He was also a member of Berry's Grove Baptist Church, where his faith was a cornerstone of his life.

Larry is survived by his beloved wife, Sherian (Sheri) Ray; his daughter, Leigh Ray Dillon; and his stepson, Christopher (Chris) Rimmer. He was a proud grandfather to Joshua Kyle Dillon, Kayla Nicole Nance, Anna Michelle Rimmer, Kylie Marie Rimmer, and Harper Lou Rimmer, each of whom brought great joy to his life.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel Coley Ray and Mozelle Byrd Ray; his brothers, Samuel Floyd Ray and Michael Coley Ray; and his son, Kyle Wayne Ray, whose memories he held deeply.
