Born in Brooklyn, New York, on December 7, 1927, Jim Maloney passed away on November 18, 2025, surrounded by members of his family. He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Geraldine (Jeri), children Kathy, Susan, Marianne, Pat, Nancy and Jim and grandchildren Andrew, Janette, Mark (Alicia), Sarah, Katya, Renée and Kara. He is also survived by his sisters Florence Gorra and Mary Elizabeth Wiedemann and their children. He was predeceased by his parents, James and Ena Alverda Maloney.

Jim enlisted in the US Army in 1945. In 1946 he was selected for Officer Candidate School. Two years later he resigned his officer’s rank to qualify for acceptance to West Point, where he graduated in 1952.

His postings as a US Army officer took him to Korea, Europe and all over the United States. Along the way Jim received a Masters in Civil Engineering at the University of Illinois.

Upon retiring from the US Army in 1970, when he received the Legion of Merit, the family moved from Omaha, NE to California, where Jim worked for 2 Department of Defense contractors. Then in 1991, Jeri and Jim moved to Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

In North Carolina, Jim taught a course at Duke University on NATO. He was also active in his church, Saint Thomas More, reading from the pulpit or singing hymns. He also organized his West Point 65th Class reunion in 2017.
