James Elias Harshaw, Sr., 86, of Chapel Hill, NC died peacefully at his home on May 20, 2026. Jim was born in McConnells, SC to Hugh John Harshaw and Ruth (“Dolly”) Hardee Harshaw. He is predeceased by his parents, his brother Hugh John Harshaw II, and his sister Anne Greenough. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Rachel Langley Harshaw; his children Deirdre Arnold (Richard), Jim Harshaw, Jr. (Kimberly), and Jason Harshaw (Dana); his grandchildren Ashley Harshaw (Nic Biggerstaff), Caelan Harshaw (Caroline), Annabel Harshaw, Donald Harshaw; and his great-grandchildren Aubrey Harshaw, Carter Biggerstaff, and Levi Harshaw. He is also survived by his sister Lynda Metzger (Roy) and brother Malcolm Harshaw (Susan) and extended family and in-laws.
After six years in the United States Air Force, Jim spent most of his career with Pilot Life Insurance and later enjoyed roles with Shenandoah Life and CompDent. Jim and Rachel retired to Chapel Hill, NC in 2005, where Jim – a Ram’s Club member for 40 years – enjoyed Carolina football and basketball games. He also spent several years volunteering with Habitat for Humanity.
A service honoring Jim will be held at Chapel in the Pines Presbyterian Church, 314 Great Ridge Pkwy, Chapel Hill, NC 27516, on May 30, 2026 at 2:00pm with a reception to follow. A livestream will be available through the church’s website https://citppc.org/ for those unable to attend.
Jim and Rachel are grateful for the pastoral care shown to them through University Presbyterian Church and Chapel in the Pines Presbyterian Church, and for the compassionate care provided through UNC Hospice. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to Chapel in the Pines Presbyterian Church in support of their ministry and mission.
