Inger K. Nielsen died peacefully with her daughters Brenda and Jane at her side on April 6, 2026. She recently celebrated her 100th birthday and remained active until her death.Inger (Kjeldgaard) was born in Copenhagen, Denmark on August 9, 1925. As a teenager she lived through the German occupation of Denmark, then immigrated to the United States after World War II. On the journey she met her future husband Gunnar Nielsen.She worked as an accountant at a Wall Street Bank in Manhattan. She and Gunnar married in the Bronx, N.Y. in 1949.They settled in Endwell, N.Y., where they built their own house and raised 5 children. Gunnar’s engineering career with IBM moved them to Concord, N.C. in 1978.Inger enjoyed family meals, gardening, bridge club, fabric arts, reading, entertaining, travel, and especially her book club. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, reading stories and sharing lifelong lessons. She faithfully attended exercise class until 2 weeks before her death. Inger and Gunnar loved both international travel and exploring the United States in their camper van which Gunnar designed and modified.Inger was preceded in death by her husband Gunnar who died in 2017. She is survived by her sister Bente Reenberg, her children: Sonja McCann (Bob), Peter Nielsen (Holly), Jim Nielsen (Pam), Jane Perkins (Gale), and Brenda Nielsen (Glenn Parks), 5 grandchildren: Brian McCann, Erik Nielsen, Laura Nielsen, Alyssa Collins, and Hanne Parks, as well as 5 great grandchildren.She is also survived by her fellow Danish immigrant and long time best friend Edith Nielsen.A Celebration of Life will occur at a future date with a private family gathering.Donations may be made to:Cabarrus Meals on Wheels342 Penny LaneConcord, NC 28025(704) 932-3412cabarrusmow.org
