Gregory Alexander Abashian

Gregory Alexander “Greg” Abashian of Chapel Hill passed away on August 14, 2026, following a brief illness. He was 69 years old.

Greg was born in Kinston NC, on July 17, 1957, to Steven and Joan Hardwick Abashian. He is preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife, Anne Albright; sister Tammi of Durham NC; brothers Mark and wife Marianna of Durham NC, and David and wife Sandra of Apex NC. Also surviving are nieces Mara Abashian and husband Lucas Aragon of Salt Lake City UT, Anya Abashian Moreno and husband John of Huntsville AL, and Caroline Abashian and husband Nathan Timberlake of Kinston NC; nephews Sevan and wife Camille Cooper of Durham NC, Michael and wife Ashley of Mebane NC, and Nicholas and fiancé Audrey Liles of Garner NC; as well as many dear Abashian cousins living throughout the US.

Greg grew up in Kinston NC and graduated from UNC Chapel Hill. He spent his career primarily in computer mainframe support, first at UNC Hospitals and then at SAS, from where he retired.

He loved spending time with his family at the home of his grandparents in North Myrtle Beach SC. He had especially fond memories of staying with his Aunt Carolyn Hardwick there while he worked summer jobs – starting out as a bus boy and ending up as a cook at the famous Rice Planters Restaurant. The family favorite, Hoskins Restaurant, is still there and he would continue to eat there every chance he had.

Some other things he loved: paddling the Eno with his sister, Hayden Valley, driving back roads, stargazing under dark skies, watching old movies, fixing broken things, woodworking, fine craftsmanship, cast iron pans, and sharp tools.

Greg was known for his witty sense of humor, his sharp mind, his generosity, his quiet strength, and his willingness to help anyone in need at any time.

His steady presence and kind heart will be greatly missed.

His family will celebrate his life at a private family gathering.

The family wishes to thank the Oncology, Palliative Care, and Hospice staffs at UNC Hospitals for their concern and care during his illness.
