Gerald Edmund Mittelstadt, born on October 26, 1937, in Nobles County, Minnesota, passed away on December 30, 2025, in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. A dedicated professional, Gerald made significant contributions to the fields of aeronautics and engineering throughout his distinguished career.
Gerry began his professional journey at Honeywell Aeronautics during the pioneering days of early spaceflight. There, he was instrumental in developing projects that focused on stabilization systems, playing a pivotal role in advancements that would support groundbreaking missions. In 1963, he transitioned to IBM, where he continued his career until his retirement in 1995, serving as Senior Engineer in the Communications Product Division. His expertise and commitment to innovation left an indelible mark on the industry, inspiring not only his colleagues but also future generations of engineers.
In addition to his professional achievements, Gerry pursued an education that reflected his passion for technology. He earned an Associate Degree from Minnesota West Community & Technical College and furthered his studies in Electrical Engineering at the University of Minnesota, laying the foundation for his successful career.
Beyond his professional life, Gerry had a broad range of interests that enriched his personal life. He loved traveling with Adele, taking many trips to Europe, with Italy being his favorite place to visit. Gerry was always one to take a picture and share the adventures with family and friends by creating musical slideshows. Additionally, he enjoyed woodworking, helping his children remodel their homes, and cheering for his beloved Tar Heel sports teams especially basketball.
Gerald was preceded in death by his parents, Edmund and Helen (Wendel) Mittelstadt, and sister Roberta.
He is survived by his wife of a precious and loving 64 years in marriage with Adele, his children Cynthia (Todd); Cathy (Jody); David (Robin); and Cristy (Kevin), his grandchildren Ryan; Kelsey; Zack; Lexi; Jake; and Erik. His brother Dennis and many dear cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
A Memorial Gathering and Celebration of Life will be held on January 8, 2026, at Walker's Funeral Home of Chapel Hill, located at 11680 US Highway 501 N, Chapel Hill, NC 27517. The gathering will commence at 10:00 AM, followed by the celebration at 11:00 AM, and will conclude at 12:00 PM.
Gerald Edmund Mittelstadt will be remembered not only for his professional accomplishments but also for his adventurous spirit and the warmth he brought to the lives of those who knew him. His legacy endures in the memories of family, friends, and colleagues alike.
A donation can be made to the American Heart Association in memory of Gerry, in lieu of flowers.
