Friedrich (Fred) August Saam, age 93, died on December 3, 2025, in his home in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. He was born in Plankstadt, Germany, on June 28, 1932, to Friedrich and Erna (Stumpf) Saam. After graduating from the gymnasium in Germany in 1952, he immigrated to the United States with his parents and sister and lived in New York City for 40 years. He served four years in the U.S. Air Force before attending Queens College in New York and New York University. His teaching career was at New York University and Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute.
He loved wearing his tuxedo, although one usually found him in his gym clothes. He also loved his martini, the game of soccer, classical and romantic music (particularly operatic music), and the study of language. Some of his final words were in Spanish with his loving caretaker, Ivis Romero. He disliked overcooked noodles, undercooked chicken, and Viennese music played badly.
He married Virginia Schutz Saam on May 4,1975, in New York City, and she survives. He is also survived by his daughter Lisa Evans, sister Lydia Wills (Robert), three grandchildren, one great grandchild, and two nieces and their families.
At his request, there will be no visitation or service.
