Earl “Max” Maxiemore Saunders Jr., a longtime resident of Orange County and member of the Schley community, passed away peacefully at the age of 92. He was born on October 31, 1933, in Alamance County.
Max was preceded in death by his parents, Earl Saunders and Juanita Watlington Saunders, and his brother, Fred Saunders.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Bertha Nichols Saunders; his brothers-in-law, Ben Nichols (Susan), and Ray Nichols (Phyllis); his nieces, Cassie Nichols Summers (Kelly) and Allison Nichols-Clapper (Hank); his nephew, Phillip Nichols (April); and his great nephews, Kessel and Ransom Summers.
A proud veteran, Max served in the United States Army as an E-3 and was stationed in Germany and Amsterdam. After his military service, he went on to retire from BellSouth following many years of dedicated work.
Max was an avid Duke fan and had a deep love for sports. He enjoyed playing both softball and baseball and found fulfillment in coaching. Whether on the field, in the stands, or at home, he especially enjoyed watching football and baseball.
Max was known for his love of sports and community. He was a member of the Schley Grange, a graduate of Alexander Wilson High School, and enjoyed the music of Frank Sinatra. Max especially enjoyed sharing stories of his travels, his military experience, and his years of coaching. He will be remembered as a devoted Duke fan, proud veteran, friend, and a gifted storyteller with a wonderful sense of humor.
A graveside service will be held Friday, April 17, 2026 at 11:00 am at New Bethel United Methodist Church, 9022 New Bethel Church Road, Rougemont, NC 27572. Reverend Dr. Ken Helms will officiate the service.
Reception and visitation will take place immediately following the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Duke’s Hock Family Pavilion in memory of Max Saunders, 4023 N Roxboro St, Durham, NC 27704-2119.
The family would like to thank the staff of Hock Family Pavilion, Duke Medical Center, UNC Hillsborough, and the staff at Peak for their kind and compassionate care.
