David Theon Marshburn II

David Marshburn II, age 51, passed away peacefully on July 16, 2026, following a courageous battle with cancer.

David was a man of intelligence, creativity, kindness, and quiet strength. Throughout his illness, he faced each challenge with courage and grace, inspiring those around him with his resilience and unwavering spirit.

A lifelong learner, David earned a Bachelor of Science from Wake Forest University and later received a Master of Science from the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill. He dedicated his professional career to computer engineering in the computer science lab at the University of North Carolina Computer Science Department and to SportMEDIA Technology (SMT) programming graphics for television sporting events. His expertise, professionalism, and willingness to help others earned the respect and admiration of his colleagues.

Outside of work, David embraced life with enthusiasm and curiosity. He was a proud member of The Board Gaming Thing (TBGT) and Who's Turn Is It Anyway, where he enjoyed countless hours of friendship, laughter, and spirited competition. An avid reader and video game enthusiast, David loved exploring new worlds through books and gaming. He also had a passion for travel and was always eager to discover new places, cultures, and experiences.

David was an accomplished woodturner who found great joy in crafting beautiful wooden bowls, each one reflecting his patience, creativity, and attention to detail. He was an exceptional cook who delighted in hosting family and friends, and he appreciated the finer things in life, especially sharing good conversation over a fine whiskey, a glass of wine, or a well-crafted cocktail. Whether gathered around a dinner table or a board game, David's warmth, wit, and generous spirit made every moment memorable.

David is survived by his sister, Tricia Marshburn Morgan of Little Rock, Arkansas; his niece, Morgan Davis, and nephew, Will Davis, both of Little Rock, Arkansas; his stepsister, Mitzie Tetterton of Jamesville, North Carolina; his nieces Denise Tetterton Steel of Jamesville, North Carolina, Natalie Tetterton Hamilton of Greenville, North Carolina, and Caroline Tetterton Gurganus of Jamesville, North Carolina; and his stepsister, Angela Aldridge of Greenville, North Carolina. He also leaves behind many cherished friends, coworkers, and fellow gamers whose lives were enriched by his friendship.

He was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Sylvia Pickett Marshburn, and his father, David T. "Dee" Marshburn.

David had a remarkable ability to bring people together. He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever carried in the hearts of all who knew him.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude for the many prayers, acts of kindness, and expressions of sympathy received during this difficult time.

A private graveside service will be held on Wednesday, July 22, 2026. Afterwards, a celebration of life is planned for Wednesday, July 22, 2026 at the Carolina Inn in Chapel Hill from 5:00 to 7:00 pm for all family, friends, and colleagues wishing to remember the moments shared with David.
