Charles Stephen Newmark, age 81, died on February 1, 2026 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina with this family by his side. He was born in New Castle, Pennsylvania on August 5, 1944 to Dr. Abe and Esther Newmark.
Chuck graduated from New Castle High School, earning All-State in basketball. He next graduated from Westminster College in 1966 majoring in psychology, and then received a US Public Health Service Fellowship to attend graduate school at the University of Alabama where he received his Ph.D in clinical psychology. While in graduate school, he also completed a one-year internship at the University of Minnesota Hospitals in Minneapolis.
Following his graduation, Chuck joined the faculty of the Department of Psychiatry at the UNC School of Medicine. He remained there until 1984, and was awarded the Diplomate of Clinical Psychology from the American Board of Professional Psychology. During his ensuing 25 years in private practice until retiring in 2019, Chuck consulted at various universities, hospitals, mental health centers, prisons and correctional institutions, as well as regularly testifying in court.
Chuck was a prolific writer and authored over 70 published articles on personality assessment as well as being coauthor or editor of five books on psychological testing. He also served as managing or associate editor of multiple journals and publications, as well as leading over a dozen state and national psychology committees. During the latter part of his career, he conducted well over 100 workshops across the country on psychological testing, with a focus on MMPI interpretations, regularly bringing his wife and children to share in his travels. Chuck, however, rarely talked about his professional accomplishments and his children learned of most of his successes well into their adult years.
Chuck prioritized his family and labored tirelessly to ensure that each of his kids and grandkids had every opportunity to excel and reach their potential. He always placed their well-being and happiness above his own. Over the years, he attended countless of athletic events, and never missed being in person to support his kids in any important event. Chuck especially looked forward to the annual family gatherings over Thanksgiving and the summer beach week.
Chuck’s greatest love was Linda, his wife of fifty six years. They shared a long life together, supporting one another through life’s challenges and changes. Their mutual respect and admiration for each other was the foundation for such a strong and enduring partnership.
Outside of family, Chuck adored animals and had an affinity for sports. After his basketball playing days were derailed by a knee injury, he remained a diehard fan. He was most passionate about the UNC Tar Heel basketball team, and followed them for every game, instilling that love of the program in each of his children and grandchildren. He also had an emotional tie to, and became a lifelong fan of, the Minnesota Vikings, originating from his friendship with many of the players during his time in Minneapolis. Outside of sports, he loved going to Las Vegas with Linda, and could regularly be found playing poker with his friends and family (after teaching his kids and grandkids to play at what may have been slightly too young of ages).
Chuck was preceded in death by his parents, Abe and Esther. He is survived by his wife, Linda, and his sister, Phyllis Newmark. His legacy continues in his children, Steve Newmark, Beth Jones (Brad) and Erica Krieg (Rob) as well as his grandchildren, Scott and Andrew Newmark, Charlie and Kate Jones, and Jason, Wes and Taylor Krieg.
The family is grateful for the support provided by Dr. Todd Granger, as well as the entire staff at Dubose Center at the Cedars in Chapel Hill.
A private graveside ceremony will occur on the morning of February 15, 2026 followed by a memorial service for friends and family to celebrate his life at 1:00 at the Carolina Club, 150 Stadium Drive, Chapel Hill, NC 27514.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Orange County Animal Services Community Giving Fund and UNC Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Fund.
