Charles Frederick Echols, Jr., passed away on March 21, leaving behind a life defined by independence, resilience, humor, and deep love for his family.Born on Thanksgiving Day, November 24, 1949, Charles carried a spirit of gratitude and individuality throughout his 76 years. He was the son of Charles Frederick Echols, Sr. and Dorothy Ann Riggsbee, and grew up alongside his sister, Kay Echols Berkley. Family remained central to his life, and he took great pride in his children, Heidi Nicole Echols and Charles Frederick Echols III, as well as his grandchildren: Samuel Godfrey, Chelsea Echols, Arden Godfrey, Simone Godfrey, Cylie Echols, and Roxanne Ivarson.A self-employed contractor for more than 40 years, he founded and ran Tri-Wall Construction, taking pride in his craftsmanship as a master plasterer. He was a man who liked to work with his hands, collected tools, and built things that lasted. He attended Louisburg College, where he earned Dean’s List honors and even had poems published. He carried that creativity into his life in unique ways, from his personal style - long hair, “professor’s brows,” and beard worn proudly for life - to his love of music, a passion he shared with his children.
Charles was also known for his storytelling and his ability to see life through his own lens, something his Grandson Sam called “Papa’s Dictionary”. He collected model trucks and cars, appreciated well-made machines (especially his Dodge truck and van), and took pride in the longevity of the things he owned.
Above all, Charles valued love, especially the love he shared with his wife, Cynthia Mullis Echols, and the closeness he maintained with his family. Charles lived a full, unconventional, and deeply human life. He will be remembered for his strength, his stories, and the lasting impact he made on those who knew and loved him.
He will be missed.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, March 26, 2026 at 10:00am. The funeral will be held at 11:00am at Walkers Funeral Home Chapel in Chapel Hill. The burial will follow in Briar Creek Memorial Gardens.
