Catherine Elizabeth Shavalier-Chernow

Catherine "Cathy" Elizabeth Shavalier-Chernow, age 75, of Efland, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on November 23, 2025. She was born on November 17, 1950, in Louisville, Kentucky, to the late Kenneth Cerrel Shavalier and Maria Davila.

Cathy earned her Master's degree in Education from Florida Atlantic University and went on to have a fulfilling career as a teacher and tutor. She was deeply loved by her students, who will remember her for her generosity and her caring nature.

On December 3, 1977, she married Robert L. Chernow. Although they had no children of their own, they were devoted to their family and were always supportive and loving toward their many nieces and nephews.

Cathy was a woman of intellect and curiosity. She will be remembered for her passion for art, archaeology, education, humanity and her fascination with the unknown. Above all, she was known for her compassionate spirit and ability to connect with anyone. She was a loving presence who was always willing to listen. She would listen without judgement.

Cathy is survived by her devoted spouse of 48 years, Robert. She is also survived by her sisters, Marge Van Dalen, Martha Van Camp, Maria Reams, and Carmen Brinda; and her brother, Gabe Shavalier. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Michael Shavalier; and her sister, Bertha Wright.

A service to celebrate Cathy's life will be held on January 17, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Walker’s Funeral Home, 11680 US Highway 15 501 N. Chapel Hill, NC 27517. A reception will follow.
