Carole Raye Sawicki

Dr. Carole Raye Sawicki passed away peacefully on September 15, 2026, at the age of 84 surrounded by her family.

She was born June 22, 1942, in Covington, KY, daughter of the late Charles Edward Caldwell, Sr. and Helen Elsa Menninger Grischy. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Sawicki, and sister-in-law, Elaine Caldwell.

Carole dedicated her life to science, medicine, and the well-being of others. Early in her career, she worked as a scientist for the EPA conducting critical research on air pollution and cancer. She later answered the call to clinical practice after graduating from UNC medical school, serving as a family medicine physician in North Carolina and eventually continuing her work in the pharmaceutical industry before retiring in 2015.

Her passion for helping others extended far beyond her professional career. Carole was an active community leader, serving on the Raleigh Parks and Recreation Advisory Board and volunteering extensively in local health initiatives. A faithful member of her church, she served as a deacon and was actively involved in the bereavement committee. She was also a dedicated volunteer and advocate for Meals on Wheels.

Energetic and competitive, Carole won several tennis championships with the Raleigh Racquet Club and was an avid runner for many years. More recently, she was known for her daily walks through the neighborhood and her active membership in her local pickleball club.

Carole leaves behind her loving daughter, Kristen Caldwell in Chapel Hill, NC, and her brother, Charles Caldwell, Jr in Kentucky, as well as many dear family members, friends, former patients, and colleagues.

Family and friends are invited to gather for a memorial service on Friday, October 9, 2026 at 2:00 PM located at White Memorial Presbyterian Church, 1704 Oberlin Rd, Raleigh, NC 27608.
