Betty Riddle Edmonds

Betty Riddle Edmonds, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on September 25, 2026, at the age of 90.

Born on July 12, 1936, Betty was the daughter of Cator Daniel Riddle and Ruth Gates Riddle. One of 13 children, she grew up in Chatham County, North Carolina, where her family worked as sharecroppers on tobacco farms. Those humble beginnings helped shape the strong, caring, and generous woman she would become.

Betty was a devout Christian whose faith guided her throughout her life. She was a true prayer warrior, faithfully praying for her family, her friends, and anyone who needed her prayers. Her faith was reflected not only in her prayers, but in the way she lived—loving others, helping those in need, and giving free of herself.

Betty never met a stranger. She had a special way of making everyone feel welcome, cared for, and loved. She would give freely to anyone in need and was the kind of person who would give you the shirt off her back. She loved her family deeply, loved cooking, and treasured every opportunity to spend time with the people she loved. She kept up with everyone and always wanted to know what was happening in their lives.

Betty lived in the Chapel Hill and Chatham County areas for much of her life before moving to Wilson in her later years. Wherever she lived, she touched the lives of others with her kindness, warmth, generosity, and genuine love for people.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Sherman “Billy" Edmonds, son Allen Ray Edmonds, (Peggy) and Sherman Leo Edmonds Jr.; and her grandson, Clint Edmonds (Billie)

She is survived by her children, Kathy Kirby and husband Gary; Teresa Durham and husband John; Eddie Edmonds and wife Erlie; and Dale Edmonds and wife Kim; her grandchildren, Stephanie Benfield and husband Lee, Kimberly Walker, Scottie Durham and wife Tammy, Kristen Tharrington and husband Ricky, Davis Edmonds and fiancé Cassie, Justin Edmonds and wife Emily, Jonathon Edmonds, and Kaitlin Edmonds; her great-grandchildren, Zoe Barnhardt, Dylan Barnhardt, Skyler Benfield, Brayden Benfield, Eliza Tharrington, Charlie Tharrington, Shelby Edmonds, and Hunter Durham; and her surviving siblings, Faye Wilson and Tommy Riddle.

Betty leaves behind a beautiful legacy of faith, family, kindness, and love. She loved without measure, gave generously, prayed faithfully, and never hesitated to help someone in need. She loved people genuinely and without reservation, and she never met a stranger. To know Betty was to feel loved by Betty, and the love she gave so freely will live on in her family and in all those whose lives she touched.

A visitation will be held at 11:00am on Wednesday, September 30, at Walker’s Funeral Home in Mebane with Funeral Service to follow. Interment will take place after at Cane Creek Baptist Church, 6901 Orange Grove Road, Hillsborough, North Carolina 27278.

Pallbearers will be Dylan Barnhardt, Brayden Benfield, Justin Edmonds, Jonathon Edmonds, Davis Edmonds, and Ricky Tharrington.
