Clarance "Peewee" Smith HILLSBOROUGH - Clarance "Peewee" Smith, 63, passed away Sunday, January 31, 2010, after
many months of battling cancer. He was born in Lumberton, NC, to Freeman and Gussy Smith, who predeceased him.
He was also predeceased by his son, Jonathon Rackley of Clinton, and his dog and loyal companion, Samantha. Chief is survived by his wife, Dortch Bass Smith; his daughters, Sandra Woods of Lumberton,
and Nancy Rackley of Clinton; his sons, Jeffrey Smith of Fayetteville and Billy Smith of Hillsborough; his sisters, Mary Lois

Charles Davis Hines, Sr. HILLSBOROUGH - Mr. Charles David Hines, Sr., 70 of Hillsborough, NC, died Sunday, January 31, 2010. Mr. Hines was the son of the late Edgar
Miller and Srah Borland Hines. He was a member of Mars Hill Baptist Church and a graduate of Hillsborough High School. He was Past Master of Eagle Lodge #19,
a member of Durham Your Rite Masonic Bodies, past member of Sudan Shrine Temple, and a member of the Amran Temple. Mr. Hines served four years in the United
States Navy and was retired from UNC and Bio Meiceux. Surviving are his wife, Norkie E. Hines; a daughter, Andrea H. Hughes and husband, Dave
of Hillsborough; a son, Charles David Hines, Jr. and wife, Amy of Hillsborough; three grandchildren, Macy Hughes, Sawyer Hughes
and Darah Hines; sisters, Nellie Tunstall of Hillsborough, Mary Catherine Roberson and husband, Jack of Pittsboro, Shirley
Brown and husband, Eddie of Richmond, VA., Sarah Jane Norton of Durham, and Irene Laube and husband, Elzie of Hillsborough;
and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Harold Hines and Edgar Hines; and his step-mother, Hazel Hines. The family will recieve friends and
family from 6 to 8 p.m. at Walker's Funeral Home of Hillsborough. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, February 3rd at 2 p.m. at Mars

Nicholas Patrickis CHAPEL HILL - Nicholas Patrickis lived energetically and purposefully for 80 years. He passed from our world on
January 30, 2010, in Chapel Hill, NC. Nick loved his family and respected his work.
Nick grew up in Burlington, NJ
with brothers, George and Billy, and sister, Mary. He served four years in the U.S. Navy and then attended the University
of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. In 1956 he met and married Marilyn Jones and they both graduated from the University of Alabama
in 1957. They moved to Birmingham, AL to establish business careers. Nick and Marilyn made a wonderfully happy family life
in Birmingham with their two children, Terry and Andy.
Nick served on the Board of Deacons and was Treasurer of the Board at 76th Street Presbyterian Church in Birmingham. He also
volunteered with the Boy Scouts that met at the church. Nick worked hard in his business career, and established his own business,
Nickolas Electronic Registers. He had a wide circle of friends and customers in the Birmingham community for over 40 years.
In 2003 Nick and Marilyn retired and moved to Chapel Hill, NC. Nick’s loving wife Marilyn continues to live in
Chapel Hill along with their daughter, Terry and son-in-law, Kevin Endo. Nick’s son Andy and his three lovely granddaughters,
Margo, Caroline, and Alexa Patrickis make their home in Mandeville, LA (near New Orleans).
Nick’s life will
be honored and celebrated in a memorial service at United Church of Chapel Hill on Friday, Feb. 5, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. The

Lenora Wagoner Marcouillier HILLSBOROUGH - Mrs. Lenora Wagoner Marcouillier, 70 of Fayetteville, NC, died at her home on Saturday morning, January
30th. Mrs. Marcouillier
was an Orange Co. native. She is preceded in death by her parents Brantley and Alma Wagoner. She was a member of
Cane Creek Baptist Church and a graduate of Hillsborough High School Class of 1957. Mrs. Marcouillier is survived by her husband Ronald Marcouillier;
one daughter, Dawn Rimmer-Bonds; one step-daughter, Tammy King; three sons: Dale Rimmer, Dean Rimmer, and Darryl Rimmer; eleven
grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Also surviving is one sister Wanda Wagoner. Funeral service will be conducted by Pastor Jack Edge
at Cane Creek Baptist Church in Orange Grove on Thursday, February 4, 2010 at 2 PM. Visitation with the family

Devin Paterson Pressley Chapel Hill - Ms. Devin Paterson Pressley quietly passed
on January 30, 2010, at UNC Memorial Hospital. She was 64. Devin was born in Oklahoma
City, Oklahoma, and raised in Hudson, Ohio. She was the daughter of Thomas Hugh Paterson and Ann Gilchrist Paterson. She graduated
from Mars Hill College in North Carolina, and spent a good portion of her life dedicated to education. She taught all ages;
from preschoolers to adults. Part of her life was also spent working on issues surrounding elder care and quality of life.
She started one of the first adult day care centers in the Asheville, North Carolina, area.
She was an adventurer and lived in many places including Tryon, Hendersonville and Ashevi!le, North Carolina; St Thomas, US
Virgin Islands; and Fall River, Massachusetts. Most recently, she lived at Emerald Pond Retirement Center in Durham, North
Carolina. Devin was a very social person and enjoyed sharing stories with others. Her hobbies included painting and doll collecting,
and she recently wanted to write and illustrate a children's book about a great blue heron she often saw on walks with her
dog, Annie. Devin is survived by her son: Bryon Scot Pressley of Durham; her brother: Thomas H. Paterson
of Tiverton, Rhode Island; and sister: Penelope Blair of Atlanta, Georgia. She was preceded in death by her eldest sister,
Martha (Becky) Holbrook, and her parents. No services are planned at this time. The

Nancy Jean Connelly Dunn CHAPEL
HILL - Nancy Jean Connelly Dunn, 77, of Chapel Hill, died Thursday, January 28, 2010 at UNC Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Dunn was born March 24, 1932 in Detroit, MI, daughter of the late Patrick J. and Angela Dreyer Connelly. Nancy was schooled
in Detroit and also attended Michigan State University and The University of Detroit. She lived in Ann Arbor, MI, Rivervale,
NJ, Trumball, CT and Stamford CT before moving to Chapel Hill in 1997. She would have celebrated her 50th wedding
anniversary this year. Nancy was the loving wife of Bob Dunn, mother of Kelly and Dave Dunn and grandmother
of Jack Dunn. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 P.M. Sunday at Walker’s Funeral Home of

James Keith Couch Hillsborough
– Mr. James Keith Couch, 52, of Hillsborough and Morehead City, died peacefully Monday, January 25, 2010, in Duke Medical
Center. He
graduated from Orange High School in 1975. After graduation, Keith worked for the family business, John
Couch Oil Co. of Hillsborough for a time. Seeking adventure, Keith moved to Costa Mesa, CA for several
years. Upon relocating to NC in 1985, Keith settled in Morehead City and was currently employed by the
Dunes Club in Atlantic Beach, a job he dearly loved. In addition to his work, he enjoyed fishing from his
boat in the sound with his life-long friend, Steve Tubiola, managing his rental properties, and the company of his many friends
as well as his co-workers and members of the Dunes Club. Keith was a devout Christian and would wish us all “The
peace of God, which passeth all understanding”, as well as asking us to always live life to the fullest.
We will miss his warm smile, quick wit, and infectious laugh. Surviving are his parents, John Edward and Dorothy Rhodes Couch of Hillsborough;
his sister, Karen Couch Copeland and husband, Steve of Hillsborough; his brother, John Edward Couch Jr. and wife, Becky of
Raleigh; his niece, Laura Ann Couch of Winston-Salem; and his nephew, John Andrew Couch of Siler City. Graveside services will be held
at 2pm, Thursday at Mt. Herman Baptist Church Cemetery in Durham by the Rev. Don Westbrook. In lieu of flowers, the family

Lucille Horner Davis MEBANE - Mrs. Lucille Horner Davis, 85,
of 6204 Hebron Church Road, went home to be with the Lord on January 25, 2010. She was born November 4, 1924, to the late William Wilson Horner and Laura F. Robinson.
Mrs. Davis was a member of Lighthouse Baptist Church and she was a homemaker. Survivors include a son: Alex Jackson Davis, Jr. and wife, Phyllis of Graham; one sister:
Adell H. Scott of Gibsonville; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded
in death by her husband of 68 years Alex Jackson Davis, Sr.; and one son, William Ralph Davis. The funeral will be conducted at 11 AM Thursday at Lighthouse Baptist Church

Samuel Mallette Gattis III HILLSBOROUGH - Mr. Samuel Mallette Gattis, III, died Saturday, January 23, 2010.
He was the son of Samuel Mallette Gattis, II and Virginia Parris Gattis and the grandson of Samuel Mallette Gattis and Margaret
Parish Gattis. Mr.
Gattis graduated from Reynolds High School, Winston-Salem, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a degree in Business/Commerce. While
at UNC he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps 1943-1946 with the Fifth
Amphibious Field Artillery and the 155th Howitzer Battalion on Leyte, Philippine Islands. In 1951, he became Assistant
Clerk of the Superior Court in Orange County. In 1953 he was appointed Orange County Accountant and Tax Supervisor.
In 1963, he became the first county manager of Orange County. He retired after 30 years of service. During
his tenure, he was named N.C. County Manager of the Year. He was a member of St. Matthews Episcopal Church,
Hillsborough, NC, where he was a Sunday school teacher for many years. He was a graduate of the UNC School of Government
Municipal Administration Program. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of the NC Local Government Employees'
Retirement System. Mr. Gattis was a licensed private pilot and a certified scuba diver. He enjoyed spending time
boating and fishing on the beaches of North Carolina, playing golf and spending time with his beloved grandchildren. Surviving are his daughter, Susan Owen
Gattis of Efland; his son, David Alexander Gattis and wife, Dana of Hillsborough; his daughter, Margaret Gattis Newton of
Mountain Brook, AL; grandchildren: Lucy Owen Newton, Anne Parks Newton, Blair Amber Gattis, Hope Alexis Gattis, and Megan
Elizabeth Gattis. Mr. Gattis was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Susan Robertson Gattis; his son, Samuel Mallette Gattis,
IV; and his sister, Virginia Charles Gattis. The funeral will be held 11 AM Wednesday in St. Matthews Episcopal Church by the Rev. Brooks Graebner
and Rev. Herman Ward. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family would like to thank Duke Hospice at Meadowlands
for their compassionate care. The children and grandchildren would like to thank the caregivers, who became a part of

Susan Jacob Verghese
CHAPEL HILL - Susan Jacob Verghese (September 29th
1947-Janaury 22nd 2010) resident of Chapel Hill, North Carolina died suddenly after a tragic
car accident. Susan was born in Hyderabad, India moving to the United States in 1972. She later would make her home in Midland,
Michigan where she devoted her life to raising her family and helping others through her work as a physical therapist. She
was one of three children born to the late V.I. Jacob and Sosa Jacob. She will forever be remembered by her devoted husband
George Verghese, loving sons Matthew Mahir Verghese and Dr. George Rohin Verghese as well as beloved siblings Dr. Mary George
and the late Jacob Isaac. She will be kept in the hearts of family and in-laws in both North America and India, especially
George Oommen, Dr. George Cherian, Dr. Rachel Cherian and Dr. Raina Paul as well as the countless friends whose lives she
touched along the way. Susan graduated from Queen Mary High School in Bombay, India followed by a Bachelor
of Science and Masters of Science in Physical Therapy in New York City. She gained advanced board certification
in the Neurodevelopmental Treatment Approach and was a member of the American Physical Therapy Association. She
went on to work at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Yonkers, NY, Fordham Hospital in the Bronx, NY and the Texas Institute for
Rehabilitation and Research in Houston, followed by 20 years in a successful private practice in Midland, Michigan. She was
devoted to the field of physical therapy, specializing in brain and spinal cord injuries. She spent more
than 35 years helping others, especially children, regain meaning in their lives after traumatic injuries and improving the
function of those born with disabilities. She stayed abreast of the current advancements in her field by attending numerous
conferences throughout the country over her prosperous career. Susan and her husband recently moved to
Chapel Hill, North Carolina where Susan had planned to continue her zest for learning by earning her doctorate in physical
therapy. She will be remembered fondly for her vivacious spirit and admirable devotion
to her family; she created a home that was full of life, love, achievement and support. Her dedication and enduring sacrifices
for her family will never be forgotten. Susan was also active in her community in Midland and engaged her creativity through
her passion for the arts. Family and friends are welcome to attend a funeral service at 2:00 PM on January
26th at Christ Methodist Church in Southern Village, followed by burial at Markham Memorial Gardens. In

Mable Terry Horner Yancey ELON - Mrs. Mable Terry Horner Yancey,
82, of Elon, died Monday, January 18, 2010, at Alamance Regional Hospital. Mrs.
Yancey was born in Alamance County and was the daughter of the late Oscar D. And Lula Walls Terry. She was employed for many
years as a winder in the textile industry. Mable was predeceased by her husbands, Everette E. “Bud” Horner, Sr.
and James David Yancey. Mrs. Yancey was a faithful member
of Shallow Ford Christian Church in Elon and loved her church family very much. She also loved taking care of her animals;
her dog, her cats, and her horse. Surviving are
her son: Harold Wayne Horner and wife, Gail of Elon; four step-children; four grandchildren: Sherry Herry,
Hoist Smith, Jennifer Paxton, and Danny Horner; seven great-grandchildren; one brother: Edward Terry; and two sisters: Mae
Clapp and Lucille Byrd. Funeral services will be Friday,
January 22, 2010, at 11:30 a.m. at Shallow Ford Christian Church in Elon with the Rev. Dr. S. Perry officiating. Visitation

Marcel G. Robins CHAPEL HILL - Marcel G. Robins, 86, passed peacefully on January 14, 2010
at the Health Center of Carolina Meadows after a brief but intense battle with cancer. With him were his loving wife, Helen
and his devoted daughters, Ann and Didi. Marcel served in the British Army, Jewish Brigade, during
World War II. He was a builder in Westchester County, NY, and continued building commercial properties in the Southeast after
his move to Chapel Hill forty years ago. No services are planned at this time. In lieu

Eleanor Fitzpatrick Neyhart CHAPEL HILL - Eleanor Fitzpatrick Neyhart, 89, of the Carolina House of
Chapel Hill, NC, passed away peacefully January 11, 2010, after a brief illness. Born December 10, 1920
in Lynn, Massachusetts, Eleanor was the only child of William and Rita Fitzpatrick. Surrounded by a loving Irish Catholic
family, Eleanor’s childhood years were spent in Lynn, Massachusetts and Ridgway, Pennsylvania. Eleanor completed her
higher education at Allegheny College and Pennsylvania State University, where she earned a degree in Accounting in 1942.
After completing her education, Eleanor was employed as one of the first female accountants at the Eastman Kodak Company in
Rochester, NY during the 1940s and 1950s. She spent most of her adult life in the Rochester, NY area where she married James
Henry Neyhart of Rochester, NY in 1957. They lived in Penfield, NY throughout their marriage, and in 2008, Eleanor moved to
North Carolina to be near her family after the death of her husband in 2006. Eleanor’s lifelong interests included golf,
needlework, ballroom dancing, flower gardening, and jazz music. She volunteered many hours at the Penfield, NY symphony orchestra.
Eleanor is survived by her son: Gregory Allen Neyhart and wife, Clara Danziger of Chapel Hill; as well as two grandchildren,
Emily Clara Neyhart and Christopher Cole Neyhart of Chapel Hill. A funeral Mass will be held on Saturday
January 16 at 10:00 am at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 940 Carmichael St., Chapel Hill, NC. In lieu

Edward B. "Johnny" Jessup MEBANE - Edward B. "Johnny" Jessup, 70, of Mebane, passed away on
Sunday, January 10, 2010 at Triad Care and Rehabilitation Center in High Point following an extended illness.
Mr. Jessup was a native of Randolph County, NC and was the son of the late William Raymond and Margaret Davis Jessup. He was
a U.S. Marine Corp Veteran and a retired brick mason. He was preceded in death by one brother, Noel Thomas Jessup.
He is survived by his wife: Patricia Waddell Jessup; son: Anthony Jessup; daughter: Debra R. Smith; brothers: Jean Jessup,

Patrick Michael Robeson CHAPEL HILL -- Patrick Michael Robeson, 50, died Sunday, January 10, 2010 at
UNC Hospital. Patrick was employed as a master carpenter. He was predeceased by his father, Edward D. Robeson,
and daughter Rachael Ann Robeson. He loved people and especially his family. He loved to serve his Lord and said "
addicts and prisoners need salvation too, I will go to the depths of hell to bring people to salvation.
Patrick is survived by his wife Irene, his mother and step-father Leatrice and Lawrence Henry, his children Mary, Christopher,
Shannon, Stuart, Michael, Dustin, Patrick II, Elizabeth, Jonathon, and Precious Joy, 4 brothers and a sister, and

Russell Clyde Laws HILLSBOROUGH - Mr. Russell Clyde Laws, 51, passed away during
the week of January 7, 2010.
He was born in Durham but lived most of his life in Hillsborough. Russell graduated from Orange High School and Rowan Technical Community College with an Associates Degree in
Occupational Health and Safety. He was a former employee at SCM Metal Products
as a safety manager.
Surviving are his son, Scott Laws of Efland; his mother, Helen Roberts Laws of Chapel Hill; and his sister, Teresa Laws
Ellis of Chapel Hill. He was predeceased by his father, C. R. Robert "Booty" Laws. The family will receive friends 6-8

Larry Vernell Terrell HILLSBOROUGH - Mr. Larry Vernell Terrell, 60, died Thursday,
January 7, 2010, in UNC Hospital after a short battle of cancer. He was born in Person County
and attended Orange County Schools. He was a carpenter. Surviving are his wife, Barbara Jenkins Terrell of the home; mother,
Elizabeth Jones Terrell of Chapel Hill; four daughters, Shannon Terrell of Hillsborough, Sherrie T. Moroda of Henderson,
Crystal Terrell of Henderson, and Rhonda T. Allen of GA; three sons, Larry V. Terrell, Jr., of Martinsville, VA,
Dusty Terrell of Hillsborough, and Jermie Terrell of Henderson; one step-son, Bill Gourley of Hillsborough; two brothers:
James Terrell of Hurdle Mills, and Mark Terrell of Chapel Hill; 15 grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren. Mr.
Terrell was predeceased by his father, Vernell Terrell, and his brother, Eugene Terrell. Graveside services will be held 2:00 PM Monday in Rosewood
Cemetery. Visitation will be 12:30-1:30 PM Monday at Walker's Funeral Home of Hillsborough.

Henry Luther Surratt, Jr. HILLSBOROUGH - Mr. Henry Luther Surratt,
Jr., 72, of Durham, NC, passed away peacefully in his home, January
7, 2010. He was a great husband, dad, grandad, brother, uncle, fishing buddy, and friend. We will miss him very much. Surviving are his wife, Rita, and two sons, Dennis and Eric;
two grandchildren, Samantha and Andrew; four sisters, Pam, Patty, Ginger, and
Rowena; two brothers: Doug and Danny; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by two brothers: Jackie and Tommy. Funeral
services will be held 2 PM Sunday in Walker's Funeral Chapel by the Rev. David
Bolick. Interment will follow in Efland United Methodist Cemetery on
Brookhollow Road.

James Vernard Adams, Sr. HILLSBOROUGH - James Vernard Adams, Sr., 76, died Wednesday,
January 6, 2010, in Veterans Admiistration Hospital. He was native of Orange County. Surviving are two daughters: Lisa
A. Hicks of Selma, and Pam Adams of Wilmington; two sons: James V. Adams, Jr., and Matthew W. Adams,both of Hillsborough;
one brother, Edward Adams of Laurinburg; and a lifetime friend, Doris Wilson. He ws preceded in death by his daughter,
Joy Marie Adams. Funeral
services will be held 1 PM Saturday in Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. John Gaither. Interment will follow in
the Hillsborough Town Cemetery. Visitation will be 6:30-8:30 PM Friday in Walker's Funeral Home of Hillsborough. Memorials may be made to the Cancer
Unit, Voluntary Service (135),the Durham VA Medical Center, 508 Fulton St., Durham,

John Lindsey Cook, Jr. HILLSBOROUGH - John Lindsey Cook, Jr., 67, died Monday, January 4, 2010. He was born in Durham
and attended the Durham schools. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He worked for Pilot Freight Carriers for twenty
years. He worked for the Town of Hillsborough for ten years until his retirement in 2005. He was a member of the
Hillsborough United Methodist Church, the Men's Wednesday Morning Bible Study, and HUMC Men's Breakfast. Mr. Cook loved his family, was a good husband for 47 years, a wonderful father, grandfather and wonderful friend
to all that knew him. He bowled in a league on Thursday nights at Palace Point in Roxboro and his team was called "Ain't
Got a Clue." He was a member of the Striper Fishing Club and was called Cook Man on Jordan Lake where he fished
with many fishing friends. He especially enjoyed blue grass music and composed and wrote a lot of songs. He played the
guitar for years with many people. He was teaching himself the banjo. His favorite pal was "Toots" his
fishing buddy, his constant companion. Surviving are his wife, Juanita Turner Cook, his son:
Michael "Todd" Cook and wife, Jill of Hillsborough; his daughter: Elizabeth (Beth) C. Bolick and
husband, Joe of Colorado Springs, CO.; three grandchildren who were the apple of his eyes, Jason Cook, Lindsey Cook,
and Hannah Bolick; two sisters: Mary Lee Sparks and husband, Phillip of Burnsville, and Linda Evans of Kaufman, TX;
and two brothers: David Dore and wife, Martha of Texas, and Tommy Cook and wife, Kim of Hillsborough. A celebration of life service will be held at 11 AM Saturday in Hillsborough United Methodist Church by the Rev. Al
Horne. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall following the service. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the church or to St. Jude's Hospital. Walker’s Funeral Home

Chad Raymond Martinez MEBANE - Mr.
Chad Raymond Martinez, 35, died Saturday, January 2, 2010. He was born in Davenport, Iowa, and graduated
from West High School and then attended technical school. Chad married Jennifer McDaniel of California and loved
his mother and father-in-law, Bill and Ann McDaniel. They lived in Victorville, CA, for seven years where he enjoyed
being a chef and working at Lomac. He later moved to Mebane, NC where he enjoyed working at Market on Clay Street
and made many friends.
Chad was a very loving individual who touched the lives of so many. He would want you to remember him with laughter in your
heart. Surviving are his mother and step-father,Linda and Herbert Morgan of Mebane NC; his ten year old son,
Keizer Martinez of Apple Valley, CA; two sisters, Melanie Kirk and husband, James of Cedar Grove, NC, Karly Martinez
of Davenport, IA, formerly of Mebane; one brother, Raymond Martinez of Davenport, IA; and his paternal grandfather, Raymond
Martinez of Buffalo, IA; and his nieces, Kaitlyn, Leslie, Bibian, and Lilian. He was preceded in death by his father, Ray Martinez of
Buffalo, IA, and his grandmithers, Katie Roe and Jean Martinez. A memorial service will be held
in Buffalo, Iowa, at Lutheran Calvary Church on January 23rd. Mr. Martinez chose to be cremated and the burial of his
remains will be at a later date at Rosehill Cemetery in Buffalo. In lieu of flowers, please

Alvin Beitler CHAPEL HILL - Alvin Beitler, 66, of Chapel Hill passed away Saturday, January 2,
2010. Al was preceded in death
by his parents Hyman and Helen Beitler. He was a graduate of UNC Chapel Hill where he was a member of the
Tau Epsilon Phi Fraternity and was a life long member of the Rams Club. Al was president of the East Chapel
Hill Rotary Club from 1987-1988 and was a Paul Harris Fellow. Al is survived by his wife of 41 years, Paula; daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and Rick Satcher; daughter,
Tina Holland; sister and brother-in-law, Lois and Jordan Freedman and three grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery on
Wednesday, January 6, 2010 at 1:00 PM.
